8 Holiday Gift Ideas For The Advertising Pro In Your Life
Christmas time is here. That means happiness and cheer…right? Well, that happiness and cheer seems to disappear when you realize you still need to get a present for that special someone. And Christmas is two days away. And that special someone is in Advertising.
Well, fear not. We know that people in marketing are some of the hardest to get gifts for—always judging the holiday commercials, the packaging and the design of all the cheesy gimmicks out there. So what are you supposed to get these people?
Speaking as people in the Ad World, ourselves, we like things that are relevant and clever.
So we thought we’d help you out with a few possibilities for great gift-giving this holiday season. (All of which can be purchased on Amazon and will come on time if you order now with 1 or 2-day shipping because, hey. Deadlines? What deadlines?)
Magnetic Poetry Kit – $11.95
Words, words, words. These wonderful little magnets you stick on your refrigerator will allow your sweetie to plan that pitch for the new client that already has them stressing.
Pantone Ornament $24.74
Get graphic. And by graphic, I mean actually graphic. Designers tend to think in colors and shapes, so why not give them their favorite color in ornament form?
Expletive Grammar Mug $25.00
An aggressive explanation of “there”, “their” and “they’re”. These are sure to appeal to the copywriter in the family. They’ll appreciate grammatically correct literature while they drink their black coffee and come up with cleaver quips and comebacks for complete dominance over the creative room banter.
You can never go wrong with books. Unless your someone hates to read. Then you’ve gone terribly wrong and they’ll think you don’t even know them at all. But if your Ad Guy/ Girl does like books, get ‘em this one. With this great book, you can sharpen your skills to become a master at life, and eventually KING OF THE WORLD. Or a pretty good advertiser, at least.
“Ogilvy on Advertising” – $15.44
‘Cause you know, he invented advertising and all.
Allow the opaque, curling smoke to billow upwards from a silhouette of a fictional ad icon, and let it fill your Advertiser’s mind with inspiration, cause and day drinking. Or get it because it’s cheap and posters are cool, even though you have no idea why this image means so much to marketers. I mean, it’s kind of cool, either way.
Launched in 1925, the New Yorker gives us ten of decades with the sassy “sophistication”. These iconic postcards would be a great gift for your designer/illustrator/ copywriter/agency groupie, or really anyone else who can appreciate the New Yorker, cover-to-cover.
Alcohol – Prices May Vary
Okay, so I’m not completely sure if you can buy alcohol on Amazon (edit: you can, but it depends on your location and age and whatnot). But liquor is a surefire way to show your marketer you care. We specifically care for bourbon. Go for bourbon. Or wine if we’re going classy.
So, we’re hoping these last-minute gift ideas help. But no matter what you ultimately choose, remember what Don Draper said: Make it simple, but significant.
